Late Pratyusha Banerjee (10 August 1991– 1 April 2016) was an Indian television actress. She had appeared in numerous television and reality shows.

Rachna Banerjee, also known as Rachana Banerjee, is an Indian film actress who has appeared predominantly in Bengali and Odia films along with several films in Telugu , Tamil & Kannada.She was 1990 Miss Kolkata and has won five beauty contests in India. She won Miss Beautiful Smile at the Miss India contest.[1]
Early life[edit]
Banerjee was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, and was her parents' only child. Her father was Upamanyu Banerjee. Her original name was Jhumjhum Banerjee, her name was changed to Rachna by Sukhen Das, the director of her debut film Daan Pratidaan (1993).
Career[edit]
Banerjee won the Miss Calcutta contest in 1990 when she was still in her 2nd year of graduation course from South City College. She entered several beauty pageants before starting her acting career and was often declared 'Miss Beautiful Smile'. In 1992 she missed out of the Miss India contest grand finale where Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was crowned. Her fame led her into films and she was spotted by Chidananda Dasgupta for his second Bengali feature film Amodini (1995). Banerjee's breakthrough role was with director Sukhen Das who changed her name to Rachana (which Das found in 'Rabindra Rachanabali'). Later she has successes acting opposite established Indian cinema actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Chiranjeevi, Upendra Rao, Mithun Chakraborty, Siddhanta Mahapatra, Prosenjit Chatterjee and Tapas Paul. She appeared in 35 Bengali films with Prosenjit Chatterjee, of which 32 were declared 'Superhits'. She has also made several Odia films, mostly with Siddhanta Mahapatra, her first husband.
Hosting Didi No. 1[edit]
Apart from acting, Banerjee has also hosted the popular Bengali non-fictionTV show, Didi No. 1, which is aired on Zee Bangla on weekdays. On 5 April 2013 a fire broke out in the studio of Didi No. 1 at Tollygunge, and she fainted following a panic attack and was rushed to a city hospital (Aurobindo Seva Sadan) immediately.[2]

Banerjee was married to actor and politician Siddhanta Mahapatra. They divorced in 2004 at a family court in Cuttack and she subsequently left the Odia Film Industry.[1][3] She is married to Probal Basu since 2007. They have a son named Proneel Basu. [4]

Banerjee first gained recognition in 2010 in the television show Balika Vadhu.[4] This was her first leading role in the television series where she earned her household name 'Anandi'.[4] She had participated in the reality show Bigg Boss 7 (2013).[5]

She was signed as lead role in 2010 Indian television series Balika Vadhu as an adult Anandi, replacing Avika Gor. According to the actress, she was chosen via a talent hunt, surpassing the contestants Nivedita Tiwari from Lucknow and Ketaki Chitale from Mumbai.[6] Following the success of the show Banerjee participated in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (season 5). However, she left the dance show, stating that she was not comfortable during the dance rehearsals.[7][8] She was also one of the most competitive contestants in the seventh season of the show Bigg Boss.[9][10][11][12][13] She appeared in Power Couple, along with her partner Rahul Raj Singh.[14] Banerjee had played vital roles in Hum Hain Na,[15]Sasural Simar Ka[16] and Gulmohar Grand.[17]

Banerjee was born in Jamshedpur city of Jharkhand to Shankar and Soma Banerjee.[6] In 2010, she left Jamshedpur to work in Mumbai.[18]
Death[edit]
On 1 April 2016, Banerjee was found hanging in her Mumbai apartment and according to the postmortem report the cause of death was asphyxia.[19][20][21][22]
